Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker
By King Yao
(2005) 350 pp., softcover, Pi Yee Press, ISBN: 0-935926-25-9. If you have learned the hands to play before the flop, and now want greater strategic challenges, this is the book for you. This book brings a precise, empirical approach to playing the later streets. Among things, author King Yao stresses constant awareness of the number of outs and the pot size. He is good at not just describing pot odds, but getting readers to absorb and master them. Yao puts a lot of emphasis on training the mind to make good moves -- an early title for the book was "Hold'em Brain." The chapter on river play is particularly spectacular. Primarily written for limit holdem players. No specialized math background is required, but the author strives for precise, computational analysis of poker moves.
